#SEOWeek: Technical SEO in 2019

Using Google Search Console to Understand Indexing

In this insightful session, NetElixir’s Director of SEO discusses the major elements of SEO, detailing everything from the importance of a website’s technical health to ways to improve organic ranking. Maintaining a technically sound website should be a priority of ecommerce retailers and digital marketers, because a healthy site allows Google to crawl its pages more efficiently. Once the pages of a website are crawled, they’re available for search engines to display in search engine results pages (SERPs).

This process comprises three main steps or stages:
Search engine bots crawl the website to discover its various pages.
After the crawl is completed, they store information about the web pages in their search index.
When a user performs a search, Google maps the search query to the pages in its search index. The results are displayed in SERPs based on 200+ factors.

We also discuss the significance of Google Search Console, highlighting why business owners should be familiar with the platform. Search Console is a valuable tool which helps users understand the crawl behavior on their site. It provides information on a variety of key aspects such as performance, URL inspections, coverage, sitemaps, mobile usability, products, and more.

SEO experts use Google Search Console to track the effect of every optimization action made on their website. The platform makes it easy to identify errors and verify that Google bots are crawling the site properly.

The mobile usability and product sections of the Search Console help retailers evaluate their website’s mobile-friendliness. They can see if there are issues in the site’s structured data, manual penalties associated with the site, or if there have been any security issues such as hacking.

In order to determine whether their site is being indexed accurately, retailers must ask these questions:

  • How many SKUs does your ecommerce site have?
  • How many static pages are on your website?
  • How many canonical pages are on the site?
